How Gauge to MM Calculator Works
This calculator functions in real-time to convert standardized gauge numbers into metric millimeters (mm). Because "Gauge" can refer to different materials (wire vs. sheet metal), our tool allows you to select the specific material system to ensure accuracy.
Understanding Gauge Systems
- AWG (American Wire Gauge): A logarithmic stepped wire gauge system used primarily in North America for electrically conducting wire. As the gauge number increases, the wire diameter decreases.
- Sheet Metal Gauge: A non-linear standard based on weight per square foot. It differs by material (Steel, Galvanized, Stainless, Aluminum). For example, 14 gauge Steel is not the same thickness as 14 gauge Aluminum.
Common Conversions
| Gauge | AWG (Wire) | Steel (Sheet) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ga | 2.588 mm | 3.416 mm |
| 14 ga | 1.628 mm | 1.897 mm |
| 18 ga | 1.024 mm | 1.214 mm |
| 20 ga | 0.812 mm | 0.912 mm |
| 24 ga | 0.511 mm | 0.607 mm |
